A deeper story, more variety in levels and characters, and some crucial bug fixes would go a long way in giving Roguebook long-lasting appeal, but it's still well-worth checking out for fans of either roguelikes or deckbuilders - as long as they can stomach a few crashes and don't mind a bit of an easier experience than they may be used to.Enter an ever-changing world full of legendary encounters and stories. It's a very good deckbuilding game hiding within an innovative take on roguelike play, and the charm of its characters and the accessibility of its difficulty will go a long way in compelling people to give it a try. It's hard to imagine, however, without some content updates in the near future and a new hero or two, that Roguebook will continue to challenge and captivate players for as long as titles like Slay the Spire have.Įrrors aside, though, Roguebook is still an exceptionally fun experience. Mileage will vary, of course, and the game features a compelling engine that makes exploring card combinations fun. Players can reasonably expect to beat the game in a few dozen hours, which is a decent amount of time but far less than many of the genre's offerings. As far as roguelikes go, Roguebook is pretty easy. Other crashes, like ones at loot collection, came up but with less frequency.īeyond the crashes, the most divisive element of Roguebook will likely be its difficulty and, as a result, its length. While reloading and not playing the card at that specific time fixed some of the crashes, it did negatively impact strategic play, which is especially egregious in a game where that's fundamentally what players have come to engage with. Some cards played at a specific time crashed the game, and continued to do so on reloads, though Roguebook thankfully saves progress frequently and any crashes generally required completing the most recent action once more. The most noticeable flaws are behind the scenes of the title, which experiences fairly frequent crashes at time of writing.

Roguebook is not a perfect game, however. Related: Neoverse Trinity Edition Review: Deckbuilding Depth and Anime Girls In this, the game feels significantly more balanced, with a slew of exciting cards available that feel mechanically distinct from each other and allow for some exciting play patterns. The actual process of building a deck in Roguebook is exciting, with players acquiring cards during their exploits and carefully working out a strategy from what's available. Some equipment, like an Epic item that doubles the damage of the first spell played each turn, outright trivializes most runs, while many of the gems feel largely useless at common rarity - and generic, which is perhaps a greater sin in a genre so full of innovation. There are more familiar roguelike trappings here, too, like equipment and card modifications, though these feel a little less balanced than the cards themselves. At the Media Indie Exchange (MIX), the online event that showcases forthcoming independent video game titles, Abrakam Entertainment and NACON released a new video for the roguelike deckbuilder Roguebook.
